How much do you pay for the internet connection?
The other day, I spoke with a friend about how much he will pay for the internet connection, once he come back to Croatia from the USA.
There’re a few options of connecting currently vailable here in Croatia, and here are my average monthly costs:
- Dial-up modem (56Kbps), which I used to pay circa $70/mth
- ISDN (128Kbps), which is double the speed of the modem connection, but the costs also duplicate, so I’d say circa $150/mth
- ADSL (512/128Kbps) with 2GB bandwidth limit, which I’m currently paying circa $22/mth.

Aprox. 20 euros for a 100Mb connection via ethernet. Up to 4-6MB/sec bandwidths with metropolitan area computers and around 100KB/sec on the external connection. No traffic limits.
It’s a neighborhood network… they buy fiber connections and resell it via regular ethernet cables.

UK: At the moment about £22 p/m ($37 / 235kn) for a 512/128 kbps which is flat rate.
For the same money I could have a 1024/192 kbps connection and I’ve also recently seen a package for 8 meg capped at 30GB a month, which costs £27.99 (about 300kn). I want to change but I have yet to make my mind up as to what I am going for next.
From when I can remember, internet connections in Croatia have always been fairly expensive.
Is it because there are only a few companies offering internet services and thus have a monopoly where they can control prices, or are there just not enough people using the services to justify lowering the costs or both???
Maybe they are just greedy!!!

I am paying CDN $48.95/mo. for Shaw Cable’s Extreme Speed Internet package which gives me:
- 7mb download speed
- 10 email accounts/100mb capacity total
- 50gb/month upstream/downstream combined
- 24/7/365 support
It also gives me a whack of other features I don’t rely on such as a firewall (have my own) 20mb of webspace (ditto) and Chat features, Video mail, email filtering*.
*The mail filtering IS configurable, which I like. It allows me to block all suspected spam and delete/store or send it through flagged (which I chose) so Thunderbird can handle it.

I am paying 34€ for a 8Mb/800Kb ADSL, unlimited bandwidth with the main national provider. But prices can go down with alternative providers, something like 15€ for 20Mb download.

8mb down, 400 (ish) kb up. Unlimited traffic.
£35 I think, it’s hard to tell once the phone is added ontop. This is from Bulldog, whom I wouldn’t really reccommend, but I don’t want to have to go without a connection just to change…

Slovakia:
I am paying 950 SKK total (which is US$29 or €24.50) for unlimited ADSL 512 kbps download / 128 kbps upload.
One half of this sum goes to Slovak Telecom, a phone line provider, the other half goes to Nextra, an ISP provider I chose. Paid separately.
The other options if you want a faster internet connection here are either a microwave wireless connection with some really small local company or, more often, a plan called chello from the cable provider UPC. Prices for chello in Slovakia) range from US$24 for unlimited 512 kbps / 128 kbps to US$82 for unlimited 6144 kbps / 512 kbps. Cable TV is not included in this price.

We got few ISP with similar prices.

€ 40 per month for 20mbit down, 1mbit up. Unlimited traffic. Includes digital football tv. (ISP Versatel/Tele2)
As it’s ADSL 2+ the down rate doesn’t max out, but it’s always higher than 6mbit for me (+4mbit for the tv signal, if you have the decoder switched on).
Now to find ftp’s which don’t throttle the speed!
